NMTA Member Comments needed regarding proposed Lake Union Seaplane Advisory Zone

Dear NMTA Member –
The rapid urbanization of Seattle is changing how boaters and boating businesses access and use Lake Union and the Ship Canal. The City of Seattle and Kenmore Air, a longtime NMTA member, are working on a plan to install a 300 by 3,500 foot permanent “advisory zone” for the safe operation of seaplanes (Click here for picture). The City of Seattle and Kenmore Air would like to have the advisory zone in place for the summer of 2016.
We have heard from a few members on this subject and are now reaching out to our full membership to solicit your comments on this important subject that some think could significantly change the characteristics of Lake Union for boaters and boating businesses. At the November NMTA Government Affairs Committee meeting, some members were concerned that this was the first step towards a permanent exclusionary zone for boats in Lake Union. Also, some members were concerned that this would prioritize seaplanes over boats on Lake Union.
It’s important to note that we have received comments in support of this proposal, too. Proponents value the importance of Kenmore Air to boating and see this as a way to ensure safety for all users of Lake Union. As boating activity of all types (motorized, sail and paddle) continues to increase on Lake Union, Kenmore Air has stated they cannot continue to operate as is unless an advisory zone is created.
All NMTA members are invited to attend a meeting to discuss this issue with the NMTA Board and staff from 6:00 - 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, December 9 at the NMTA office (1900 N. Northlake Way, Suite 233, Seattle, WA 98103). Members can email their comments to the NMTA Board or RSVP to attend the December 9 meeting at info@nmta.net.
This is a complex situation that involves competing priorities about safety, boating access, and how boating businesses fit into a changing city. The NMTA Board is seeking a solution that allows boats and seaplanes to coexist and needs your input before NMTA submits its final comment letter in late December.
Sincerely,
George Harris
President/CEO
