Article: Industry should focus on growing Hispanic market

Interesting blog post from Trade Only Today's Norm Schultz regarding how the boating industry is attempting to and plans to embrace a growing Hispanic market. Something to consider in your own business objectives and forecasting.

Recover Washington

NMTA has joined up with other businesses and business associations to ensure that the Legislature, and, in particular, the Democrats in the state House of Representatives know that taxing small businesses is not the way to come out of the Recession. For more info on this effort (called Recover Washington), listen for the radio ads or visit the new coalition website: Recover Washington

Exciting new data from the Recreation and Conservation Office

Dig into the latest survey research from our friends at the Recreation and Conservation Office (RCO). There's a lot of great data here, and what you'll find is very encouraging about boat use in our state.

Here's the link to the documents and other info about the 2013 State Comprehensive Outdoor Recreation Plan (SCORP) http://scorpwa.wordpress.com/.

Thank you RCO and Dominga Soliz.

Take Action Today!

We need your help! Governor Inslee recently released his budget plan and it includes significant tax increases that will harm boaters and boating businesses.

The Governor’s priorities could be devastating to our industry if the Legislature enacts them.

Here are the specifics:
1. The Governor wants to reduce the “trade-in allowance” for new and used boat purchases. Right now boat buyers pay sales tax only on the difference between the value of their trade-in and their new purchase. The Governor wants to cap the amount of tax-free dollars at $10,000.
2. The Governor wants to begin taxing marina tenants by charging B & O on their slips. Currently boat owners are exempt from paying sales tax here, but his proposal would begin taxing long-term moorage (defined as moorage longer than 30 days).

New taxes on boaters and boating businesses would seriously undermine the “fragile recovery” that is occurring for our industry. The Governor needs to know that if boating becomes more expensive fewer people will boat which will mean less tax dollars from existing taxes for the State.
Please take a moment to become part of the conversation that is taking place now in Olympia. I encourage you to share your story with your senator and representatives. Our lobbyists are communicating with the legislators, but now more than ever they need to hear from you, back home, in their districts.

NMTA's Board Member Dan Wood in the news

NMTA's Board Member Dan Wood and his partners at Crow’s Nest Yachts Seattle are acquiring Crow’s Nest Yachts San Diego, bringing the Seattle and San Diego offices of this well-known brand under one ownership group.  The new owners, Dan Wood, Vic Parcells and Dale Partna, bring a wealth of knowledge to the San Diego location, with more than 80 years combined experience in the yacht brokerage industry.

“We’re thrilled to acquire Crow’s Nest Yachts in San Diego,” said Wood.  “The Crow’s Nest name is a strong brand, and this gives our customers access to quality yachts up and down the West Coast.”

The three partners took over ownership of the Seattle location at south Lake Union in 2010, growing the business in the past three years.  They take over operations immediately at the San Diego location, which is located in the heart of San Diego Bay on Shelter Island Drive.

“We have moorage available at our private marina for brokerage boats, as well as clients’ boats passing through,” said Parcells. “We want to be known for offering top quality yachts, as well as offering a prime location for yacht moorage complete with parking.”

Crow’s Nest Yachts has set a high standard of excellence in the Pacific Northwest, and the new owners seek to provide exceptional service for clients up and down the entire West Coast, aiming to exceed expectations.

“While we’ve been concentrating our efforts primarily in Seattle the past several years, we are well acquainted with southern California and know how yacht owners use their boats there,” said Partna. “Our goal is to continue to provide quality yachts and service, and to give new owners the best boating experience we can.”
